What is a Website Wireframe?

A website wireframe is a basic visual plan for how a website will look and work. Think of it as a blueprint that shows where everything will go, like menus, content, images, and buttons. Wireframes are usually created early in the process to help designers and developers figure out the layout before diving into the design or coding stages.

Wireframes are often made using tools or software that let designers drag and drop elements to sketch out a rough version of the site. (We like Figma for this.) They’re usually kept simple, focusing on the structure and layout rather than details like colours, fonts, or images.

Creating a wireframe has some great benefits. First, it helps everyone involved visualise the site’s structure without spending too much time on design details. It’s easier to try out different ideas and make changes at this stage, without having to redo lots of work later.

Second, wireframes are really helpful for getting input from stakeholders like clients or project managers. By sharing the wireframe early, you can make sure everyone is on the same page and get feedback on the layout before moving on to the next steps.

Having a website wireframe also makes the design and development process more efficient. They act as a guide for designers to focus on the creative elements and give developers a clear layout to start building functionality. (Please note they are not the same as a schema!)

When making a wireframe, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. Focus on the overall structure and keep it simple. Use placeholder text and basic shapes instead of worrying about specific design details. Involve stakeholders in the process to make sure the layout meets their needs and expectations. Don’t be afraid to tweak and improve the wireframe as you go—it’s meant to be a flexible tool.

In essence, a website wireframe is a key step in creating a great site. It helps plan the layout, get feedback early, and set the stage for a smooth design and development process. By keeping it simple and involving others, you’ll build a strong foundation for a successful website.
